Forensic Science with i3 STEM Grant
i3 STEM Overton Cluster gathered at Overton High School to learn about career opportunities related to forensic science.
Yes, our students can become a:
Detective
Crime Scene Investigator
Crime Scene Sketch Designer
Policeman
Educator
Forensic Digital Technician
Doctor in Forensic Science
The doors are opened and everyone's brain received a powerful infusion of knowledge --- without a doubt, our students are aware, realize and understand they play a key role in shaping their future.
** Simon Palacios (Teacher) and two of his high school cadets from Stratford STEM NSST Criminal Justice Academy (1800 Stratford Nashville, TN 37216) taught the students the steps to analyze a Crime Scene.
The simulation was real, thorough and the opportunity was given to each student to draw what they observed based on the evidence available.
** Next... We had a great time with Dr. E from Science Guy
She is so fun and professional. She relates to the students and knows how to get them involved. Her activities were:
Chromatography -
The students were able to create a relationship - with day to day items - what could happen in a crime scene involving blood...
A Cup, Water, Coffee filter and markers it's all that is needed to understand the relationship of how a liquid is absorbed on a variety of fabrics.
Just like it happens with blood.
What did the students learn: Their patience was tested. Coordination - they could not dip the coffee filter.
Visibility - from a black marker they could see the spectrum of colors (rainbow).
Chemiluminescence - the production of light from a chemical reaction. Two chemicals react to form an excited (high-energy) intermediate, which breaks down releasing some of its energy as photons of light to reach its ground state. This is what happens with glow sticks, fireflies and jellyfish.
In a crime scene this technology is key to identify blood.
** Two officers (C. Foster and S. Jones) from Metro Nashville Police Dept - Crime Scene Investigations - taught the students how to find, identify and register fingerprints.
Attention to detail, not rushing, gentleness, being delicate is so important in this step. The slightest mistake will erase the fingerprints!!!
