Powerful STEM reaches diverse communities at Nashville Zoo
I am glad I got up on time to go meet Victoria Franklin, Founder of Dear Music, (non profit organization supporting diverse abilities/communities), to be a part of her event - Sensory Christmas at the Nashville Zoo.
Less than 1.5 mths ago she planned this empowering event, never done at the Zoo... And less than 72 hrs ago, it was confirmed the event was a reality.
Yes, after many efforts, attempts and phone calls Vicky was ready to cancel the event for lack of support. But, the powers of being would not allow this and at the last minute, master networker Vicky gathered the troops and secured donations from Asurion Bank, Wal-Mart, Kroger and Little Ceasar's Pizza on Nolensville Pike.
Asurion donated funds to pay for everyone's tickets. Wal-Mart donated materials to make crafts. Kroger donated snacks and water. Little Ceasar's donated pizzas for our attendees.
We are in awe. We are thankful. We are thrilled. We were scared.
Why scared? A Sensory Christmas event had never been held at the Zoo, supporting the autism community and low income families with diverse needs.
Why is this important? First, because the Zoo opened the doors. The precedent is established. The decision to work together, to follow the path of partnering with a grassroots organization servicing diverse families is extremely important in a diverse city like Nashville.
Thank you Nashville Zoo for your commitment and support from all your incredible employees who made our day so special.
What did I do? I volunteered my time and held a craft making session. The Popsicle Harmonicas are always a hit. Everyone is learning Science and they don't know it. The end result is all that matters -- Music is created! Everyone - children and adults - their face of surprise is the best gift.
A relaxing craft with yarn was welcomed by many - great to work with motor skills and patience. Gorgeous tree ornaments were the final product.
The interaction with Santa and Mrs. Claus unequaled to none.
Will this happen again? It must.
Will I be there? Indeed I will.
I invite businesses and other organizations to support Dear Music, and Vicky. There is tons more she has planned and we shall all be a part of it.
