The Power of "Yes, You Can!"
Denise Rocha, NAZA STEAM Initiative Site Coordinator at Wright Middle School joined the students and supported the learning steps.
Last week, we began the germination process.
It is so motivating to hear the students ask if the sprouts of lettuce they were seeing (left) -- were a part of the seeds they planted last week.
Click here to read last week's blog!
They were surprised.
They asked many questions - the main one last week and this week is:
How are they growing if there is no soil?
My explanation (a refresher) is: Rockwool (lana de roca), moisturize nutrient (equivalent to soil), pH balanced distilled water (6.5-7), growth light and a balanced room temperature (73 degrees F) - all these variables create the most reliable environment to grow, in this case, lettuce!
And the real action began...
Distribute
Measure
Cut
Put together
This is the first stage of building the hydroponic system.
Because in two weeks - the sprouts will be transferred.
As usual... the greatest reaction and rejection comes from the girls when the need existed to use the saw the cut the PVC pipes --
Why cut?
I don't know how to cut?
I cannot do that?
I do not give up... I seek the bonding between teacher and student where I must build trust.
The key element is to emphasize -- YES YOU CAN!
VIDEO: YES YOU CAN!
This is where the value of EDP = Engineering Design Process = presents its worth...
When the students begin to work -- they follow instructions, they imagine, they plan and they start creating.
The photos speak for themselves...
Our students are capable... Gender does not determine ability.
When I, the engaged teacher, reassure the student and create opportunity, achievement is real.
An important lesson for all involved...
We continue!!
